Whilst walking my Cavoodle pup, which my wife assured me was one of the most masculine K9s on the market. I had a brain wave. An idea for a countdown, like never seen before. What if I researched the best basketball TV commercials and then ordered them in a 10 to 1 fashion. Unheard of right!
I know, I know! It’s been done a million times before and will be done a million times more. However I ask you this? ‘What is a basketball culture website without a greatest hoops commercials countdown! I had so much fun researching this that I strongly recommend you all slapping together your own lists, or even just ripping the bottom out of mine, as I’m sure I’ve missed a bunch. These lists have a tendency to favour the older commercials as they think it adds credibility to their thrown together post. I’ve tried not to do this. Whilst viewing all the commercials I tried to grade them on:
1. Standing the test of time
2. The Chill factor (wether it made my hair stand on end or laugh)
3. Frozen moment (Not being able to take my eyes of the footage)
Ten too five I just posted and could really of been thrown together in any order without hearing any complaints from me. Five too one however I tried to explain myself a little bit.
10. Derrick Rose (The Return)
9. Tracy McGrady (Unstoppable)
8. Larry Johnson (Grandma Ma commercials)
7. Michael Jordan (Failure)
6. Sir.Charles “I am not a role model.”
5. Michael Jordan ‘Frozen Moment”
Coming in a number 5 is MJ’s frozen moment. I love this ad. Not, only because I get a reminder of the greatest there ever was, but because it hits home. My wife would watch this add and be like “Cool MJ in slow motion to opera. Now pass the remote, the notebook is on 7’mate”. For all the basketball fanatics out there, that moment, that frozen moment, when you know something insane is about to happen on the floor, is what its all about. Not sure they could of captured it any better.
4. “The Showdown”
I feel it would be impossible to do a top 10 without this ad. Firstly because whenever this discussion comes up someone is bound to say “Over the beam, off the wall, nothing but net” Within 20 seconds. Add that fact to the eternal coolness of the 80’s NBA and it’s a no brainer.
3. NBA “ Old meets New”
This could VERY easily of been number 1. Every single time I watch it I get chills and end up trying to download some hardwood classic from the 80’s or 90’s. The reason I have it weighing in a 3 is because it’s yet to stand the test time (ironic as that’s what the ad is all about!).
2. Nike freestyle dribbling commercial
You re-watched it didn’t you?? So much fun! Maybe 20minutes for me! That’s how long it took me to resume my search of best ever basketball ads. This is three or so minutes, worth of eye-brow scrunching footage. How the? Did he just? All the while your bopping your head. Super cool, the first of its kind and underrated by many.
1. Nike “let your game speak”
We all know the moves. We all know the games. We all know the performances. Most importantly we have all tried to replay them in our backyard. Tell me you didn’t smile when that kid, hit’em with the crossover back to his left for the pull-up?
