Tom Hersz

When you’re introduced to the NBA as a 6 year old in 1984, staying up late to watch Bird, Magic and Dr. J, it’s pretty hard not to fall in love with the game. I became consumed with the Association, and as my own game was developing, I tried to emulate as much as I could at an early age and learn how to play “the right way”. I have memories as a teenager of being glued to Saturday Basketball on TV and spending every spare cent I had on basketball cards and replica jerseys and so began my obsession with NBA knowledge and stats. I played my first season of Fantasy Hoops in 2002, as my serious playing days were slowing down. I now play in 5 or 6 leagues every year. To say I’m obsessed with Fantasy Hoops would be an understatement. To say I love nothing more than sharing my opinion on a player’s value would be entirely accurate, and I guess, the reason why I’m here.

Music of the Traffic – Week 8

Music of the Traffic – Week 8

NBA Fantasy: The return of Kobe Bryant made the biggest headlines in NBA circles this past week.  After his first game where he struggled, I was asked if he was currently unplayable in Fantasy teams. My response was that he could be great or terrible or anything in between – it is just too early to know. I added that… Read more →

Music of the Traffic – Week 7

NBA FANTASY All the hand injuries in the NBA this past week made me think of the classic early-90s film Edward Scissorhands. Young Edward was misunderstood and outcast, but when finally accepted by just one family who gave him a chance, he showed what he was capable of. With that sentiment in mind, who should you take a chance on… Read more →

NKOTB: The 2014 NBA Draft Class

NKOTB: The 2014 NBA Draft Class

There was something special in the air at the United Center in Chicago recently and it had nothing to do with Derrick Rose or the Bulls. Despite the fact that several NBA GMs were on hand to witness what was transpiring on court, it didn’t involve anyone who had ever played a minute of NBA basketball. No, it was the… Read more →

It’s Thanksgiving week in the US, so what does that mean for your squad for Week 5? As always, the Downtown team is looking out for you; listening… Read more →

Revenge of the Nerds!

Revenge of the Nerds!

NBA FANTASY: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.” – Mark Twain As someone who (very) briefly studied statistics at University, this famous quote always makes me smile. Mark Twain was trying to tell us to be wary of statistics being used to bolster a weak argument or being used to prove an opponent’s point. Of… Read more →

NBA FANTASY: Whether you’re 2-0, 1-1 or 0-2 so far in your head to head league, or you’re in first or last place in your roto league, it’s time to start assessing your squad’s strengths and weaknesses. I’ve already told you not to panic, (http://downtownball.net/2013/11/stop-dont-panic/) but it’s never too early to start tinkering with your line-up. This is especially true right… Read more →

NBA FANTASY HOOPS We’re less than 2 weeks into the NBA season, and already there are several players who are not living up to expectations. You planned carefully for your draft, you projected their production for this season, you watched closely during preseason to ensure they were getting the minutes and usage you anticipated, and you drafted accordingly. So what… Read more →
